There are quite a few preventative methods for helping secure your computer, as well as do-it-yourself solutions.
Preventative methods: Being aware of what you download and what sites you visit, as well as installing anti-virus and anti-spy ware programs are surefire ways to protect your computer. Sometimes those glitches still manage to weasel their way into your computer though, and youve got to do something about it.
The best way to find and remove malicious software from your system is to download and run an anti-malware or anti-spyware program. If you have pop ups, program icons your dont recognize, or a new home page that you did not set, you might have a virus or just spy ware on your computer.
You can begin by removing programs; open the Start MenuControl Panel Programs Uninstall a Program (or if you have XP: Add/Remove Program). A list of programs should open, here you will be able to see how often these programs are used and how much space they take up. There may be programs that seem to be relatively active that you have never seen before, or did not intentionally download. It is advised to remove these programs. Simply click Uninstall Program, and make sure you delete any files associated with the program.
After this step, you can search for temporary and executable files on your computer and delete them, as some of them can be harmful. Simply do a search for .tmp or .exe. to locate them. It is not advisable to open them, especially as the executable files can be the carrier of the virus and may lead to a computer crash. Some of the files you might recognize, so you can keep them as they might have something to do with a program you still need, otherwise delete them all. (You can always download a file again if you delete the wrong one.)
Finally, you should look into run anti-spyware programs. Most people have 2-3 of them on their computer at a time, such as McAfee, Windows Anti-Virus, Norton, or Symantec. Only download these programs from their websites, never from a third-party site.
Generally, this will remove any viruses or spyware on your computer. If not, you might have to locate your initial install disk for your computer and reinstall your operating system.
